Two days is the right length for Ninh Binh. It is enough for one of the big boat trips, the Mua Cave viewpoint at dawn, the old capital at Hoa Lu and a quiet second boat, without the rush of a day trip from Hanoi. Day 1 arrives by mid-morning, visits Hoa Lu and takes the Trang An boat in the afternoon. Day 2 climbs Mua Cave at sunrise, then poles through Van Long or rows Tam Coc before you move on.
The plan assumes you base in Tam Coc, as our where to stay in Ninh Binh guide recommends for most first visits, and get around by bicycle, e-bike or scooter. All the fees below are 2026 prices, paid in cash.
Day 1: Hoa Lu and the Trang An boat
Morning: arrive from Hanoi. Take an early train from Hanoi Station, about two hours for around 100,000 VND, or a limousine van with Old Quarter pickup for about $10-12. Our Hanoi to Ninh Binh guide compares them. Drop your bags in Tam Coc and hire a scooter or e-bike for about 120,000-150,000 VND a day, or a bicycle if you prefer.
Late morning: Hoa Lu ancient capital. Hoa Lu was Vietnam's capital from 968 to 1010, before the court moved to Thang Long, now Hanoi. Two seventeenth-century temples to the Dinh and early Le kings stand in a valley ringed by limestone that once served as the city walls. Entry is 20,000 VND, and 90 minutes is plenty.
Lunch near Trang An or back in Tam Coc. Local goat and crispy "burnt" rice are the Ninh Binh specialities you will see everywhere.
Afternoon: the Trang An boat. This is the one boat everyone should take. Trang An is the heart of the Trang An Landscape Complex, inscribed by UNESCO in 2014 as Vietnam's only mixed cultural and natural World Heritage site. Tickets are 250,000 VND per person on all three routes, and booths sell from 7 am to 5 pm. Boats take four passengers plus the rower, so solo travellers are paired.
| Route | Time | What you see | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Route 1 | about 3-3.5 hours | Nine caves, three Dinh dynasty temples | The full classic |
| Route 2 | about 2-2.5 hours | Four caves, a film set | A shorter trip |
| Route 3 | allow about 2.5-3 hours | Three caves, including one nearly 1 km long, and the Vu Lam royal steps | Avoiding crowds |
On an arrival day, route 2 or route 3 fits best. Start by about 2 pm so you are off the water before dusk, and carry small notes for the rower's tip, around 30,000-50,000 VND per boat.
Evening: dinner in Tam Coc village, and an early night for the sunrise climb.
Day 2: Mua Cave at sunrise, then a quiet boat
Dawn: Mua Cave. Mua Cave is really a viewpoint, reached by roughly 500 uneven stone steps above the Ngo Dong valley. At the fork near the top, go left along the dragon ridge for the famous view down over the river and the paddies. Entry is 100,000 VND. Fit walkers take 15 to 30 minutes, and at 6 am the platforms are close to empty. By midday it is hot and crowded, and at sunset you queue for the best spots. The upper steps have no continuous handrail, so take care when they are wet.
Breakfast back in Tam Coc.
Mid-morning: choose your second boat.
- Van Long nature reserve. About 19 km from Ninh Binh city, this is roughly 3,500 hectares of flooded wetland under the karst, poled in flat-bottomed boats with no caves, no temples and no queue. It costs 20,000 VND entry plus 60,000 VND per two-person boat. Our pick for a second boat.
- Tam Coc. The river trip from the village itself, about two hours through three caves and the paddies. With the area fee, boat charge and tip it comes to roughly 195,000-250,000 VND a head. It is spectacular in the golden harvest of late May and early June, and gentler the rest of the year.
Afternoon: Bai Dinh or onward travel. If you have time and like monumental architecture, Bai Dinh, 30 km from the city, is a vast modern pagoda complex with an arhat corridor lined with 500 stone statues. Entry is free, but the electric cart to the halls costs about 120,000 VND return. Otherwise, take an afternoon train or van back to Hanoi, or head south on an overnight train from Ninh Binh station.

If you have more time
A third day adds Cuc Phuong National Park, 45 km west, with primary rainforest, a primate rescue centre and, in April and May, butterfly season. It needs a whole day. Our day trips from Ninh Binh guide ranks all eight options, including the Phat Diem stone cathedral. If you are deciding between Ninh Binh and a bay cruise, see Ninh Binh vs Ha Long.
Limitations
Fees, route times and fares are 2026 figures from operators and our own indexes, and they change: boat prices in particular rise at peak times and on holidays, when queues also grow. Route times on the water vary with crowds and rowers. The cost totals are estimates, not quotes, and depend on your room and how many people share it.
Workaround: carry enough cash for the fees and tips, arrive at the ticket booths early on weekends, and confirm the latest boat price at your homestay the night before.
