Cuc Phuong is Vietnam's oldest national park, a block of limestone forest about 45 km west of Ninh Binh city and roughly 120 km from Hanoi. Adult entry costs 60,000 VND, about $2.30. In one day you can see the primate and turtle rescue centres by the gate, stop at a prehistoric cave, and walk the forest trail to the thousand-year-old tree. From Ninh Binh it is an easy day with about an hour's drive each way. From Hanoi it is possible but long, at 2 to 3 hours each way by private car.
It is the opposite of the rest of Ninh Binh: no boats and no rice-field views, just shade, birdsong, animals rescued from the wildlife trade, and a long road through the trees. If you have done the Trang An boat and want something completely different, this is the day to take.
What Cuc Phuong is
The forest was set aside by the Prime Minister's Decision 72/TTg on 7 July 1962 and became a national park in 1966, as the Vietnamese Wikipedia entry sets out, and it is usually described as Vietnam's first national park. It covers 22,408 ha across Ninh Binh, Thanh Hoa and the former Hoa Binh, now part of Phu Tho, and won the World Travel Awards title of Asia's Leading National Park six years running, from 2019 to 2024, according to the Government news portal. The highest point, May Bac peak, rises to roughly 650 m.
Ninh Binh's tourism department lists 135 mammal species, 336 birds, 122 reptiles and amphibians and more than 2,200 plant species on its Cuc Phuong page, and dates human remains in the park's caves to about 7,500 years ago. Wild animals are hard to spot on a day visit, so the rescue centres are where you see the rare species up close.
Getting there from Ninh Binh and Hanoi
The main gate is on the park's south-eastern edge, in the former Nho Quan district. From there a single road runs about 20 km into the forest to the park centre at Bong, where the old-tree trail starts. You need your own wheels inside the park, so whatever you arrive in should stay with you for the day.
| From | By | Time | Cost (2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ninh Binh city | Private car or taxi | At least 1 hour, ~45 km | ~300,000-400,000 VND one way by taxi or Grab |
| Ninh Binh city | Motorbike | At least 1 hour, ~45 km | Rental plus fuel |
| Hanoi | Private car with driver | About 2-3 hours, ~120 km | ~1.5-2 million VND for a full-day return |
| Hanoi | Motorbike | About 3-4 hours on ordinary roads | Rental plus fuel |
| Hanoi | Bus to Ninh Binh, then taxi | About 3-4 hours with the change | ~80,000-120,000 VND bus plus the taxi above |
From Ninh Binh. Oxalis Adventure's park guide puts the gate about 45 km from Ninh Binh city, about an hour by road. A VietnamTourism.com guide updated in October 2026 is more cautious, budgeting about four hours of driving for the round trip from Tam Coc, so do not plan on less than an hour each way. The same guide gives 300,000 to 400,000 VND for a taxi or Grab to the gate. A Hanoi transfer company's price list, updated in September 2026, quoted about $55 for a return trip from Ninh Binh in a four-seat car. If you ride, it is a workable scooter day on ordinary roads; the day trips from Ninh Binh guide gives local rental prices.
From Hanoi by car. VnExpress put the drive at about two hours in April 2024, and the October 2026 VietnamTourism.com guide gives 2.5 to 3 hours for 120 km, with a private car and driver at about 1.5 to 2 million VND for the day. The fast part is the expressway to Ninh Binh, which the Hanoi to Ninh Binh guide covers; the last stretch to the park is on ordinary roads. My private driver hire guide explains how day hire works.
From Hanoi by motorbike. Under the Law on Road Traffic Order and Safety, Law 36/2024/QH15, in force since 1 January 2025, motorbikes may not use expressways, as VOH summarised. Riders take National Road 1A and then Road 12B, about 3 to 4 hours, according to the VietnamTourism.com guide. That makes a same-day return from Hanoi by motorbike too long for most people; stay in Ninh Binh or overnight in the park instead.
By public transport. Buses from Hanoi's Giap Bat station to Ninh Binh cost about 80,000 to 120,000 VND and take about 2 hours, according to the VietnamTourism.com guide, and the Hanoi to Ninh Binh guide covers trains and vans. I could not confirm any public bus that runs on to the park gate. Take a taxi from Ninh Binh for the last 45 km and keep it for the day.
Tickets and opening hours
The visitor fee is set nationally. The Finance Ministry's Circular 206/2016/TT-BTC, which covers Cuc Phuong and five other national parks, sets these rates, and the legal database lists it as still in force in October 2026:
| Ticket | Price |
|---|---|
| Adult | 60,000 VND (~$2.30) |
| University or vocational student, with card | 20,000 VND |
| Child aged 6 to under 16, or school pupil | 10,000 VND |
| Child under 6 | Free |
VnExpress confirmed the 60,000 VND adult price at the gate in April 2024, with motorbike parking at 10,000 VND. The October 2026 VietnamTourism.com guide gives car parking as 30,000 VND, an electric car that saves about 3 km of walking on the old-tree route at about 100,000 VND return, and opening hours of 6:00 to 18:00, with the ticket office closing at 17:00 and last entry to the old-tree trail at 15:00.
The rescue centres are where the sources disagree. The VietnamTourism.com guide says the primate and turtle centres are included in the park ticket. Ninh Binh's tourism department page, last updated in April 2025, lists separate tickets of 50,000 VND for adults and 20,000 VND for children at each of the primate centre, the turtle centre and the carnivore and pangolin programme. Oxalis Adventure gives 80,000 VND for adults at the primate centre. I could not settle this from a distance, so budget up to about 200,000 VND per person for all three and carry cash.
The rescue centres by the gate
The primate and turtle centres sit about 500 m inside the main gate, so they are the first stop of the day and the easiest to fit in.
The Endangered Primate Rescue Center. Tilo Nadler of the Frankfurt Zoological Society founded it in 1993 with two confiscated Delacour's langurs, and Zoo Leipzig took over its full management in 2013, according to the centre's own history. It has rescued more than 300 primates from the illegal wildlife trade, and in 2016 it housed 160 animals on 9 ha. You see langurs, gibbons and lorises, including the critically endangered Delacour's langur, in enclosures and semi-wild areas. Visits are guided and are booked through the park's tourism office, as the centre's visit page explains. Allow about 45 minutes.
The Turtle Conservation Centre. Fauna and Flora International set it up in 1998 as a rescue centre for turtles seized from the trade, and handed it to the park at the end of 2001. The Asian Turtle Program, which supports it, says it holds more than 1,000 turtles of 22 of Vietnam's 26 native species. The public section opened in 2010, with underwater viewing tanks, an incubation room and ponds. Allow about 20 minutes.
The carnivore and pangolin programme. Ninh Binh's tourism department lists a third centre, for rescued pangolins and small carnivores, with its own ticket. Ask at the gate whether it is open to visitors on the day.
If you are driving, the Bear Sanctuary Ninh Binh, run by the animal welfare group Four Paws, is about 8 km from the park and is usually open from 9:00 to 17:00, according to its visitor page, which suggests confirming on its Facebook page before you go. It can fit on the way back.
The forest walks: the old tree and the cave
The road into the forest is the heart of the day. It passes Mac Lake, 1.5 to 2 km inside the gate, then runs on through the trees towards Bong.
The Cave of Prehistoric Man. On the road between the gate and the park centre, this cave held three ancient graves that Oxalis Adventure dates to about 7,500 years ago. It is a short stop on the way in.
The thousand-year-old tree. The best-known walk leaves from near Bong. Sources give a round trip of about 6 to 7 km from the car park, 2 to 3 hours on a well-marked, mostly shaded trail. The tree at the end, a giant chò, is about 45 m tall and 5 m across, but it is dying: Oxalis Adventure says it began to die naturally in 2017, and VnExpress described it as badly decayed in 2024. Walk it for the old forest on the way, not for the tree.
Shorter options. There is a botanical garden loop with labelled trees, and a steeper climb of about 2 km from the road to May Bac peak, which the VietnamTourism.com guide advises against after rain. For a full day of hiking with a guide, longer routes run deeper into the park; the Vietnam trekking guide compares Cuc Phuong with Pu Luong, Sapa and Cat Ba.
A one-day plan from Ninh Binh
- 7:00 Leave Ninh Binh or Tam Coc by car or scooter.
- 8:00 Buy tickets at the gate and visit the primate and turtle centres when they open.
- 9:45 Drive into the forest, stopping at the Cave of Prehistoric Man.
- 11:00 Walk to the thousand-year-old tree and back, 2 to 3 hours.
- 13:30 Lunch. The VietnamTourism.com guide mentions a few small restaurants near the park headquarters and guesthouses, with simple dishes at prices above Ninh Binh's, and suggests bringing snacks and water.
- 15:00 Drive back towards the gate, with a stop at Mac Lake or the Bear Sanctuary.
- 17:00 Back in Ninh Binh.
From Hanoi, the same plan starts at about 6:30 and ends at about 18:30, and you may have to skip either the long walk or the Bear Sanctuary. The 2 days in Ninh Binh itinerary shows how Cuc Phuong works as a third day after the boats and Mua Cave.
When to go: rain, leeches and butterflies
- November to April is the dry season and the best time for walking, according to Oxalis Adventure. Winter days can be cool and grey; my Ninh Binh weather guide has the month-by-month figures.
- April and May bring the butterflies. VnExpress described the season as running from late April to about the end of May, with more than 400 species in the park, mostly white and yellow. In 2026 it came two to three weeks early, in early April, after sunny days following rain, as Viet Nam News reported. Go on a sunny morning and look along the park road.
- June to September is leech time on damp trails, in the heart of the wet season, according to the VietnamTourism.com guide. Wear long trousers tucked into socks and carry DEET repellent. Heavy rain can make the steeper trails slippery.
- Butterfly season draws a surge of visitors, Viet Nam News noted, so pick a weekday if you can.
Tour, private car or your own wheels?
| Option | Price (2026) | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Group or hotel day tour from Hanoi | ~900,000-1,500,000 VND per person | Solo travellers based in Hanoi |
| Private guided tour from Hanoi | From ~US$122 per person, for two or more | Wildlife focus, with a guide |
| Private car from Hanoi | ~1.5-2 million VND per car | Groups of three or four |
| Taxi or car from Ninh Binh | ~$55 return, or 300,000-400,000 VND each way | Anyone staying in Ninh Binh |
| Your own scooter from Ninh Binh | Entry, parking and rental | Confident riders on a budget |
The VietnamTourism.com guide gives 900,000 to 1,500,000 VND per person for hotel and agency day tours from Hanoi with transport, a guide and lunch. A private guided tour from Hanoi listed on TourRadar started at US$122 per person, for a minimum of two, in October 2026. Car prices are from the sources in the transport section above.
Pick a tour if you are travelling alone from Hanoi, or want a guide who can arrange the primate centre visit. Pick a private car if you are three or four people, because the price per head falls fast. Ride yourself from Ninh Binh if you are comfortable on a scooter: it is by far the cheapest way to spend a whole day in the park. If you have the time, stay a night: the park has rooms at Mac Lake from about 500,000 VND and simple stilt houses at Bong from about 100,000 to 170,000 VND a night on weekdays, according to Oxalis Adventure, and a night tour by electric car has run since May 2024, from 19:00 to 22:00 with about 100 visitors a session, as Nhan Dan reported. The October 2026 VietnamTourism.com guide gives its price as 150,000 VND. For other places to sleep, see where to stay in Ninh Binh.
Limitations
I could not find an official, current price list from the park itself. The entrance fee comes from the national circular and is confirmed by press reports, but the rescue centre prices and opening hours come from travel guides and an April 2025 provincial page that disagree with each other. Drive times and car prices are from guides and operators rather than measured trips, and walking distances on the old-tree trail vary by source because they start from different points. I could not confirm a public bus to the gate.
Workaround: carry cash for up to about 200,000 VND per person in extra centre tickets, confirm hours at the gate on arrival, agree the car price and the full day's stops before you set off, and start early so that a slow road or a closed centre still leaves time for the forest walk.
