The easiest way from Hanoi to Cat Ba is a bus-and-boat combo ticket. You are collected from your Old Quarter hotel, driven about two hours to Hai Phong, taken across the water, and shuttled the last stretch into Cat Ba town: 3.5 to 4.5 hours door to door for roughly 8 to 17 US dollars in 2026. If you are coming from Ha Long, the Tuan Chau to Gia Luan ferry crosses in 45 to 50 minutes. The cable car from Cat Hai shortens the crossing but stops in the mid-afternoon. Unless you have a particular reason, book the combo: it bundles every leg and fixes the timing.

Cat Ba is the independent base for Lan Ha Bay, the quieter neighbour of Ha Long: our Cat Ba Island guide covers what the island is good for, and our Ha Long vs Cat Ba vs Lan Ha comparison helps if you are still choosing.

Times for shared vans are bus figures, not private-car figures: the combo shuttle stops for pickups and runs conservatively on the expressway. Our travel time atlas explains why the mode matters for every northern route.

The bus-and-boat combo: the default

The combo is the route most travellers take, and for good reason. It starts with an Old Quarter hotel pickup, runs about two hours by van to Hai Phong on the Hanoi–Hai Phong expressway, crosses to the island by speedboat in roughly 5 to 10 minutes or by the cheaper ferry in 25 to 35, and finishes with a 30 to 40 minute shuttle into Cat Ba town. Door to door is about 3.5 to 4.5 hours.

Prices run roughly 8 to 17 US dollars as of 2026. Cat Ba Express and Good Morning Cat Ba are the best-known operators; Good Morning Cat Ba lists standard buses at about 10.50 dollars and VIP limousine vans at 15 to 17. The limousine vans carry fewer passengers and make fewer stops, which on a four-hour trip is worth the difference. Several departures run each day in both directions, and the return works the same way in reverse, with a pickup from your Cat Ba hotel.

Via Hai Phong by train or bus

If you would rather take the train, services run from Hanoi to Hai Phong, and from Hai Phong a speedboat crosses directly to the island. It is quick on the water but depends on the sea, and you handle the transfer from the station to the pier yourself. It suits travellers who enjoy trains or who are already in Hai Phong; for everyone else, the combo is simpler and rarely slower.

From Ha Long: the Tuan Chau ferry

The Tuan Chau to Gia Luan crossing is the link between the two bays. It sails from Tuan Chau, near Ha Long City, to Gia Luan on the north of Cat Ba Island in about 45 to 50 minutes by car ferry, or around 30 minutes by hydrofoil. Sailings run about three times a day in winter and five in summer, so check the day's timetable before you commit. From Gia Luan it is roughly 30 minutes by road to Cat Ba town; arrange a taxi or shuttle in advance. It is the most scenic way onto the island and the natural choice if you have already been to Ha Long Bay: our Hanoi to Ha Long Bay guide covers the first leg.

The cable car from Cat Hai

The Sun World cable car, opened in June 2020, spans 3,955 m of open sea from Cat Hai island to Phu Long on Cat Ba, turning the old ferry crossing of about 20 minutes into a nine-minute ride at around 70,000 VND each way. In peak season, when the ferry used to queue for hours, it is a real saving. The catches are the hours (roughly 9 am to 3:45 pm, with a midday break) and the landing at Phu Long, 15 to 20 minutes by road north of Cat Ba town. Useful on a busy weekend with a mid-day arrival; easy to miss if you are running late.

By private car

A private car suits families and groups, and anyone starting late in the day. The drive to the Hai Phong side takes around two hours on the expressway, and the crossing is added on top. Ask your driver or agency which crossing they will use and whether the fare includes the ferry, since that is where quotes differ.

Which should you pick?

  • First visit, travelling light: a combo ticket with a limousine van.
  • Coming from Ha Long: the Tuan Chau to Gia Luan ferry, with road transport arranged at Gia Luan.
  • Love trains, or already in Hai Phong: the train to Hai Phong and a speedboat across, weather permitting.
  • Arriving on a peak-season weekend: a combo that uses the cable car, if you can reach Cat Hai before mid-afternoon.
  • Family or small group: a private car, confirming which crossing is included.

Gotchas

  • Weather. Every route includes a sea crossing, and crossings can be suspended in storms. The north's typhoon season runs from late May to early November, most often from July to October; see our Hanoi weather guide. Keep your arrival day flexible in those months.
  • Weekends and holidays. Vietnamese weekends and summer holidays fill the vans and ferries. Book a day or two ahead, and further ahead around Tet.
  • Afternoon cut-offs. The cable car stops around 3:45 pm and the Tuan Chau ferry sails only a few times a day. If you set out late, the combo (which fixes the connections) is the safer choice.

Once you are there, our guide to day trips from Cat Ba covers Lan Ha Bay, the national park and the rest of the island.

Limitations

Combo prices and departure times are 2026 operator listings and change with the season, fuel prices and demand; confirm with the operator when you book. Ferry frequencies, cable car hours and the cable car fare vary by season and have changed before, so check the day's timetable. Private-car times are approximate, because the crossing and the pier used vary.

Workaround: book the combo through a named operator with a clear inclusions list, keep the Tuan Chau ferry as a backup if you are coming from Ha Long, and in storm season allow a spare day on either side of the crossing.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to get from Hanoi to Cat Ba?

About 3.5 to 4.5 hours door to door on a bus-and-boat combo, the standard route. That covers roughly two hours by van from the Old Quarter to Hai Phong on the expressway, a short sea crossing, and a 30 to 40 minute shuttle into Cat Ba town. Treat it as a shared-shuttle time rather than a private-car time: pickups and conservative speeds add time, and a summer weekend or a slow ferry queue can push it towards the top of the range.

How much is the bus from Hanoi to Cat Ba?

Combination tickets covering the van, the crossing and the island shuttle cost roughly 8 to 17 US dollars as of 2026, depending on the operator, the vehicle and the season. Good Morning Cat Ba, for example, lists standard buses at about 10.50 dollars and VIP limousine vans at 15 to 17. Cheaper tickets usually mean a larger bus and more pickups; the limousine vans are faster and more comfortable, and worth the few extra dollars.

Is there a ferry from Ha Long to Cat Ba?

Yes. The Tuan Chau to Gia Luan crossing links Ha Long City to the north of Cat Ba Island, taking about 45 to 50 minutes by car ferry or around 30 minutes by hydrofoil. Sailings run about three times a day in winter and five in summer. From Gia Luan it is roughly 30 minutes by road to Cat Ba town, so arrange a taxi or a shuttle before you cross. It is a scenic connection if you are combining the two bays.

Can I take the train from Hanoi to Cat Ba?

Only part of the way. Trains run from Hanoi to Hai Phong, and from Hai Phong you can take a speedboat directly to the island, which is quick but depends on the weather. It is a good option if you like trains or want to avoid the van, but it means handling the transfer from Hai Phong station to the pier yourself, so it rarely beats a combo ticket on time or convenience.

What is the Cat Ba cable car and should I use it?

The Sun World cable car opened in June 2020 and spans 3,955 m of open sea from Cat Hai island to Phu Long on Cat Ba, replacing the old ferry crossing of about 20 minutes with a nine-minute ride. It costs around 70,000 VND each way. The catches are its hours, roughly 9 am to 3:45 pm with a midday break, and its landing at Phu Long, 15 to 20 minutes by road from town. Useful in peak season; easy to miss otherwise.

When do the boats to Cat Ba stop running?

Services run through the day, but the last practical connections are mid-afternoon on some routes: the cable car stops around 3:45 pm, and the Tuan Chau ferry has only three to five sailings a day. Combo tickets fix the timing for you, which is part of their value. In storms, especially in the typhoon-prone months from July to October, sea crossings can be suspended at short notice, so keep your arrival day flexible.
