Where to Stay in Ha Long Bay 2026: Bai Chay, Cat Ba or Cruise

For most first visits, the best place to stay in Ha Long Bay is on an overnight cruise: you sleep on the bay, and the cruise includes transfers from Hanoi and meals, so you need no hotel at all. If you want a night on land, stay in Bai Chay for the widest choice of hotels, the beach and Sun World, or on Tuan Chau island, beside the port where most overnight cruises board. Hon Gai, across the bridge, is the local city side. Cat Ba, on the Hai Phong side, is the base for independent trips to Lan Ha Bay.

Ha Long Bay is about 2.5 to 3 hours from Hanoi by expressway. Since Vietnam's 2025 reforms, Ha Long is no longer an administrative city, and Bai Chay, Hon Gai and Tuan Chau are areas under Quang Ninh province, while Cat Ba now belongs to the Cat Hai special zone of Hai Phong. Hotels and cruise operators still use the familiar names.

On a cruise: the default

An overnight cruise is the right way to see the bay for most people, and the cabin is your hotel. Most overnight cruises now board at Tuan Chau International Passenger Port, which in 2026 also serves many Lan Ha Bay routes; higher-end and international ships use the Ha Long International Cruise Port in Bai Chay, and Bai Tu Long Bay routes often leave from Hon Gai. Some Lan Ha cruises still board at Got pier on the Cat Hai side, so always confirm the pier with your operator.

Prices start at about $105-160 a person for one night on a three-star boat, and $145-250 for four-star, as our Ha Long Bay cruise costs guide explains, and two nights are better than one if you have time. Most cruises include a shuttle from Hanoi's Old Quarter, so most travellers sleep in Hanoi before and after.

Bai Chay: the visitor district

Bai Chay is Ha Long's main visitor district, on the west side of the bridge: the beach road, the Sun World Ha Long complex, bars and restaurants, and by far the widest choice of hotels. Booking.com listed about 286 places to stay there in September 2026, with featured rates from about $9 to $79 a night. It suits families who want Sun World and the beach, and travellers who want a lively evening. The downsides are crowds at peak times and higher prices near the big attractions, and the area varies block by block, from the beachfront near Sun World to quieter streets set back from the road.

Tuan Chau's port is about 20 minutes away by car, and the Ha Long International Cruise Port is in Bai Chay itself.

Tuan Chau: beside the cruise port

Tuan Chau is an island linked to the mainland by road, with a resort feel, and its great advantage is being next to the port where most overnight cruises board. It makes sense for the night before an early boarding or after a late return. The trade-off is that there are few places to eat or go out beyond the resorts, so for a night out you will take a taxi to Bai Chay.

Hon Gai: the local city

Hon Gai lies on the eastern side of the Bai Chay Bridge. It is the established city, with markets, seafood restaurants, a waterfront and the Quang Ninh Museum, and it feels more like a working Vietnamese town than a resort. Hon Gai pier serves many Bai Tu Long Bay cruises, but Tuan Chau is about 20 to 25 minutes away by car. It suits return visitors and travellers who care more about food than the beach.

Cat Ba: the independent base for Lan Ha Bay

Cat Ba is the largest island in the archipelago, on the Hai Phong side, and the base for day boats and kayaking in Lan Ha Bay, which has the same scenery as Ha Long with far fewer boats. Stay in Cat Ba town for restaurants and the harbour, or near the Cat Co beaches for a quieter stay. Sun Group opened a new waterfront complex in town in May 2025, with a night market and beach clubs.

It is also the cheaper option. Booking.com listings in September 2026 showed budget rooms at about $12-16 a night, mid-range at $27-41 and upper-range at $50-70 or more, and homestays typically charge about 400,000 to 800,000 VND a night. Getting there takes 3.5 to 4 hours from Hanoi; our Cat Ba guide and Hanoi to Cat Ba guide cover the bus-and-boat routes and the cable car, and Ha Long vs Cat Ba vs Lan Ha compares the bays.

Prices and seasons

Rooms in Ha Long and on Cat Ba are cheapest outside the Vietnamese summer and holidays. Rates can rise sharply around 30 April-1 May, 2 September and Tet, when some hotels ask for minimum stays of two or three nights, and Cat Ba homestays charge roughly 40% more in summer. The bay itself is at its best from October to November; our Ha Long Bay weather guide has the month-by-month picture, including the typhoon months when cruises can be cancelled.

Getting there and around

Hanoi to Tuan Chau is about 160 km, or 2.5 to 3 hours by expressway, and most cruises and many hotels arrange shuttles from the Old Quarter; our Hanoi to Ha Long Bay guide compares the options. From Van Don airport, Tuan Chau is about 30 to 45 minutes away and Hon Gai just over an hour. Within Ha Long, use taxis or Grab between the areas.

Limitations

Price bands come from Booking.com listings in September 2026 rather than editorial surveys, and they change daily; we found no reliable 2026 figures for Tuan Chau or Hon Gai. Cruise boarding piers change between seasons and operators. The administrative names of Ha Long's areas changed in 2025, and some addresses may use the new ward names.

Workaround: confirm your cruise's boarding pier before booking a hotel, compare prices across booking platforms for your dates, and book early for Vietnamese holidays and summer weekends.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the best place to stay in Ha Long Bay?

On an overnight cruise, for most first visits: you sleep on the bay, and the cruise includes transfers from Hanoi and meals, so you need no hotel at all. If you want a night on land, Bai Chay has the widest choice of hotels, the beach and Sun World, and Tuan Chau island is closest to the port where most overnight cruises board. For independent trips to Lan Ha Bay, stay on Cat Ba.

Is it better to stay in Bai Chay or Hon Gai?

Bai Chay for convenience, Hon Gai for local life. Bai Chay is Ha Long's visitor district, with the beach road, Sun World and the most hotels, restaurants and bars, but it is busy and prices near the big attractions run higher. Hon Gai, on the east side of Bai Chay Bridge, is the established city, with markets, seafood restaurants and the Quang Ninh Museum, but it is about 20 to 25 minutes by car from Tuan Chau.

Should I stay on Tuan Chau island?

Only if your cruise leaves from Tuan Chau International Passenger Port and you want to be close the night before or after. The island has a resort feel and is right beside the port, which in 2026 handles most overnight cruises, including many Lan Ha Bay routes. The trade-off is that there are few places to eat or go out beyond the resorts, so for an evening out, Bai Chay is about 20 minutes away.

Should I stay in Ha Long or Cat Ba?

Stay in Ha Long if you are taking a cruise from Tuan Chau or Bai Chay, or want Sun World and the beach. Stay on Cat Ba if you want to travel independently: it is the base for day boats and kayaking in Lan Ha Bay, with hiking in Cat Ba National Park and cheaper rooms. Cat Ba is on the Hai Phong side, linked to Ha Long by boat and to the mainland by a cable car and ferries.

How much does a hotel in Ha Long cost?

Budget rooms start at about $9-15 a night and most mid-range hotels in Bai Chay cost about $25-80, according to Booking.com listings in September 2026. On Cat Ba, budget rooms run about $12-16, mid-range $27-41 and upper-range $50-70 or more, and homestays about 400,000-800,000 VND a night. Prices rise sharply on Vietnamese holidays, when some hotels ask for minimum stays of two or three nights.

Do I need a hotel if I take a Ha Long Bay cruise?

Not for the cruise itself. Overnight cruises include your cabin, meals and usually a shuttle from Hanoi's Old Quarter, so you can go straight from Hanoi to the boat and back. A hotel near the bay only makes sense if you arrive by air at Van Don airport, want to break the journey, or are adding a day at Sun World or on the beach. Most travellers sleep in Hanoi before and after.
