The only practical way from Hanoi to Phu Quoc is a nonstop flight: about 2 hours 5 minutes, on Vietjet, Sun PhuQuoc Airways and Vietnam Airlines, with around a dozen departures a day between them as of September 2026. Low-season one-way fares run about 1.2 to 2 million VND ($46-77), and peak dates reach 3 to 4.8 million. Phu Quoc airport is about 10 km south of Duong Dong. Going overland means a 33-hour train to Ho Chi Minh City, then a bus and a ferry.

Phu Quoc is Vietnam's largest island, in the far south-west off the Cambodian coast, and its dry season runs from late November to April, just as Hanoi turns cool and grey. That makes this one of the most popular winter routes in the country.

The flights

Three airlines fly nonstop from Noi Bai to Phu Quoc International Airport:

  • Vietjet, the largest on the route, with around 36 to 38 flights a week.
  • Sun PhuQuoc Airways, the airline of Sun Group, which began flying in November 2025 and now runs about 34 to 37 flights a week.
  • Vietnam Airlines, with about 13 to 14 flights a week on schedule trackers, and 3 to 4 a day on its own site in peak periods.

That adds up to about a dozen flights a day, spread from early morning to late evening. The flight takes about 2 hours 5 minutes. Bamboo Airways no longer appears on the route in the 2026 schedules.

What it costs

A Vietnam Airlines price guide updated in May 2026 puts low-season one-way base fares at about 1.2 to 2 million VND, roughly 46 to 77 dollars, and peak fares at 2.5 to 3.5 million, and in late September 2026 the airline's own site listed one-way fares from about 1.13 million VND. Holidays go higher still. Over Tet 2026, one-way fares on the busiest days reached about 4.5 million VND on Vietnam Airlines, 3.1 to 4.4 million on Vietjet and 2.8 to 3 million on Sun PhuQuoc Airways, as VTC News reported. Over the 30 April holiday, Vietnam Airlines charged about 4.8 million.

Baggage changes the comparison. A basic Vietjet fare includes only a 7 kg cabin bag, and checked baggage costs extra. Vietnam Airlines economy fares include 20-23 kg checked. Sun PhuQuoc Airways' economy fares are listed with 23 kg checked on booking sites, but check your fare's conditions when you book. Our domestic flight prices guide compares fares across Vietnam's main routes.

When to book. For the dry season, book about two to three months ahead, and earlier for Christmas, New Year and Tet. Midweek flights are usually cheaper than Friday and Sunday departures.

Getting to Noi Bai

Noi Bai is about 45 minutes to an hour from the Old Quarter by car, longer at rush hour. Our Noi Bai airport guide covers the taxi, Grab and bus options. It is a domestic flight, but bring your passport as ID.

Arriving in Phu Quoc

Phu Quoc International Airport is about 10 km south of Duong Dong, the island's main town. Typical transfer times by car, as of 2026:

ToDistanceTime
Duong Dong~10 km15-25 minutes
Long Beach10-15 km20-30 minutes
Ong Lang15-20 km25-40 minutes
Khem Beach and Sunset Town~20-30 km30-45 minutes
Grand World and Bai Dai, north30-40 km40-60 minutes

A Grab to Duong Dong costs about 150,000 to 220,000 VND, and a metered taxi about 180,000 to 220,000 VND. VinBus public buses also serve the airport; since the start of 2026 they charge 20,000 VND for a short trip and 50,000 VND for a longer one. Our where to stay in Phu Quoc guide explains which part of the island suits you.

The airport is being expanded for APEC 2027, which Phu Quoc will host: a second runway made its first test flight in July 2026, and a new terminal is due in phases from the end of 2026. Expect some construction around the terminal.

Overland: possible, but slow

There is no road or rail link to the island. The overland route is the Reunification Express from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City, about 33 to 34 hours, then a bus to Rach Gia or Ha Tien on the south-west coast, and a fast boat to Bai Vong on Phu Quoc's east coast. Superdong and Phu Quoc Express take about 1 hour 20 minutes from Ha Tien, for about 216,000 to 230,000 VND, and about 2 hours 20 minutes from Rach Gia, for about 315,000 to 330,000 VND, as of 2026. Our ferry prices guide has the details.

In total that is about 35 to 38 hours. It only makes sense if you want to ride the whole railway, or if you are working through the Mekong Delta on the way. Our Ho Chi Minh City to Phu Quoc guide covers the southern options.

Timing your trip

The dry season runs from late November to April, and December to March is the driest stretch. From May to October the southwest monsoon brings rain and rough seas to the west coast, with August the wettest month. Our Phu Quoc weather guide has the month-by-month figures, and our 3 days in Phu Quoc itinerary plans the trip once you land.

Which should you pick?

  • Almost everyone: a nonstop flight, compared across all three airlines with baggage included.
  • Travelling light on a budget: a basic Vietjet or Sun PhuQuoc Airways fare booked well ahead.
  • Combining with the Mekong Delta: fly to Ho Chi Minh City, travel through the delta, and take the ferry from Rach Gia or Ha Tien.

Gotchas

  • Holiday fares. Tet, the 30 April and 2 September holidays, and Christmas and New Year push fares to three or four times the low-season price.
  • Baggage. Compare fares with a checked bag included, not base fares.
  • Fish sauce. Vietnam Airlines accepts up to 3 litres of Phu Quoc fish sauce in checked baggage if it is in sealed plastic bottles inside a foam box, but not on its ATR72 flights and not in the cabin, and Vietjet's conditions say it may refuse strong-smelling foods, naming fish sauce. Check your airline's rules before you buy.
  • Monsoon months. From July to September, boat trips and west-coast swimming are often cancelled. Fly then for the prices, not the beaches.

Limitations

Frequencies and fares come from airline sites, schedule trackers and Vietnamese press reports in 2025 and 2026. Sources disagree on how many flights each airline runs, schedules change with the season, and fares move daily, so treat the figures as ranges. The airport expansion dates are official targets.

Workaround: compare all three airlines with baggage included on the dates you want, book two to three months ahead for the dry season, and check the airline's baggage rules before you pack.

Sun PhuQuoc Airways, the airline of Sun Group, began flying in November 2025 and now runs almost as many Hanoi flights as Vietjet. Bamboo Airways does not appear on the route in the 2026 schedules.

When is the best time to fly to Phu Quoc?

From late November to April, the dry season, when the sea on the west coast is calm and boat trips run reliably. December to March is the driest stretch.
