The fastest way from Ho Chi Minh City to Nha Trang is to fly: about 65 minutes from Tan Son Nhat to Cam Ranh, 35 km south of the city, from around $23 booked ahead. The Reunification Express is the most comfortable way by land, about 7.5 hours on the daytime trains from about $15 in a soft seat. Sleeper buses cost from about $10 for 8 to 10 hours, usually overnight. Since the expressway was completed in April 2024, a private car takes about 5.5 hours.
Nha Trang is the classic first beach stop north of Saigon. Check the season before you book: October and November are its wettest months, as our Nha Trang weather guide explains.

Bus and car times are road times on the North-South Expressway. Our travel time atlas explains why buses on the same road run 30-60 percent slower than cars.
By air: the fastest option
Vietnam Airlines, Vietjet and Bamboo Airways fly from Tan Son Nhat (SGN) to Cam Ranh (CXR) many times a day, in about 1 hour 5 minutes. It is one of Vietnam's cheapest domestic routes: advance fares start around 600,000-900,000 VND one-way on a Vietjet base fare, and typical fares with a bag run about 1,000,000-1,600,000 VND, according to our domestic flight price guide.
Cam Ranh is about 35 km south of Nha Trang. The airport bus into the city costs about 50,000-80,000 VND, and a Grab or metered taxi about 280,000-400,000 VND, taking 40-50 minutes. Counting check-in and the transfer, door to door is three and a half to four hours, still far quicker than the ground options.
By train: the comfortable option
The Reunification Express runs north from Saigon station to Nha Trang, 411 km, and on this short leg the daytime trains are the ones to take. These are the northbound times from the current timetable published by Seat 61:
| Train | Leaves Saigon | Arrives Nha Trang |
|---|---|---|
| SE8 | 06:00 | 13:45 |
| SE6 | 08:40 | 16:12 |
| SE4 | 19:25 | 02:52 next day |
| SE2 | 20:35 | 03:50 next day |
The two night trains arrive in the small hours, which makes little sense on a journey this short unless you are continuing north. On the best trains, fares for the leg are about 404,000 VND in soft seat, 763,000 VND in a six-berth hard sleeper and 869,000 VND in a four-berth soft sleeper, as listed in our train fares guide. Book through Vietnam Railways or an agent such as 12Go or Baolau.
By bus: the budget option
Sleeper buses are the cheapest option at about 250,000-390,000 VND ($10-15), with cabin-style berths at about 500,000-560,000 VND. They take about 8 to 10 hours and mostly run overnight. Futa, The Sinh Tourist and Hanh Cafe are the best-known operators, and the fares are covered in our sleeper bus fares guide. Big operators use terminals outside the city centre, so check where yours stops and whether a shuttle is included.
Buses have benefited less from the new expressway than cars, because they pick up passengers, stop for breaks and keep to lower speeds. An overnight bus still saves a night's accommodation, which is its real appeal.
By private car
With the expressway complete from Ho Chi Minh City to Nha Trang since April 2024, a private car takes about 5.5 hours. It suits families and groups, and anyone who wants to stop on the way, at Mui Ne for lunch, for example. Prices are quoted per car by agencies and hotels, so compare two or three and confirm that tolls are included.
Which should you pick?
- Short on time: fly, and book early for holidays.
- Want a comfortable day of travel: the 6:00 or 8:40 train, in a soft seat.
- On a budget: an overnight sleeper bus.
- Travelling as a family or stopping at Mui Ne: a private car.
- Heading on to Da Lat: fly or take the train to Nha Trang, then the mountain road up; our Nha Trang to Da Lat guide covers that leg.
Gotchas
- Holiday demand. Nha Trang is a domestic beach favourite, so flights, trains and buses fill up around Tet, the April 30 to May 1 holiday and summer weekends.
- Early-hours arrivals. Night trains and many buses arrive before dawn. Check that your hotel allows early check-in, or choose a daytime service.
- Storm season. October and November bring heavy rain to this coast, and storms can disrupt flights and roads. Keep a buffer if you travel then.
For the next leg north, our Da Nang to Nha Trang guide covers the same coast in the other direction.
Limitations
Fares and times are 2026 listings from Vietnam Railways via Seat 61, our own fare and flight indexes, and bus operators. They change with the season and demand, and train timetables are revised from time to time. Flight fares in particular move daily. Road times depend on traffic and weather.
Workaround: check the current Vietnam Railways timetable and fares when you book, compare flight prices across the three airlines, and allow extra time around holidays and in the October-November rains.
