Here is the plain answer: December turns Vietnam's map upside down. The south is at its annual best — Phu Quoc, the Mekong Delta and Ho Chi Minh City sit in the dry season with seven to eight hours of daily sun and almost no rain. Hanoi is cool, grey and dry, and the far north is genuinely cold: Sapa averages 7-13°C, nights approach freezing, and snow, though rare, has fallen in town in the third week of December twice in the past dozen years. The central coast is drying out after its autumn floods but is not yet dry. And over all of it sits the calendar — Christmas and New Year are the most expensive fortnight of the year outside Tet.
Two things make December 2027 different from the 2026 edition of this month. The Da Lat Flower Festival, which runs in even years, does not take place, so the highlands are quieter and cheaper than in a festival December. And Tet 2028 falls early, on Wednesday 26 January, which means the pre-Tet build-up starts pulling on domestic demand before the Christmas crowds have gone. The northern winter
Hanoi in December is dry and cool rather than cold: historically 15-22°C, about 20 mm of rain over five days — one of its driest months — and four hours of sun. The catch is the sky. Winter here comes with a grey lid and light, persistent drizzle, and published climatologies note very cool periods when a northern cold wave drops the lows to 7-8°C for a few days. It is excellent walking weather with a jacket and poor weather for blue-sky photographs. The Hanoi guide works best around long lunches and the evening food streets.
Ha Long Bay is calm and cool. Rainfall is minimal at around 20 mm, seas are settled and cancellations rare, but days sit at 15-22°C and the water has cooled to 23°C, so swimming is for the determined. The signature winter haze wraps the karsts in atmospheric mist on good days and flattens them on grey ones. Book a well-reviewed boat via the Ha Long Bay guide and treat the fog as part of the picture.
Sapa is the cold story, and the numbers are real. The historical December average is 7-13°C, and the same climatologies record that night temperatures can approach freezing between December and February, with winter days whose highs stay below 5°C. Frost is routine at elevation. Snow is rare but not theoretical: it fell in Sapa town on 19 December 2014, again in late January 2016 during the cold wave that took the station to a record minus 4.2°C, the lowest since records began in 1956, and briefly on 18 December 2025, when temperatures dropped to 1-2°C. Fansipan's summit has held 60 cm of snow in a strong February cold wave. Local meteorologists also note that snow days have grown rarer over the past two decades, so treat it as a lottery ticket rather than a plan. Guesthouse heating is often inadequate; the Sapa guide has the packing list, and a winter-weight sleeping layer belongs on it.
The central coast: drying out, not yet dry
December is when the centre turns the corner, but not all the way. Da Nang and Hoi An have historically averaged around 215 mm over 18 rainy days at 20-25°C, and Hue around 310 mm over 20 days with three hours of daily sun. That is half of November, and serious flooding becomes unlikely after the first ten days — but published climatologies keep the central typhoon window open until about 10 December, and a wet, grey week is still the most common outcome. Nha Trang, on the tail of its own rainy season at roughly 155 mm, is a soft beach bet. The south at its best
Phu Quoc hits its stride. December opens the island's dry season: historically 24-31°C, about 60 mm of rain over six days, eight hours of sun a day and a 28°C sea, with the northeast monsoon leaving the west-coast beaches calm. Climatologies flag a declining residual cyclone risk in December, which is honest but small. Everyone knows this, which is why the island is the country's marquee Christmas destination and why the Phu Quoc guide tells you to book early.
Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong are dry and easy: 22-32°C, roughly 50 mm for the whole month, steady river levels for the Mekong Delta, and day trips from the Ho Chi Minh City guide that run without a weather caveat. Da Lat, at 1,500 metres, is at its clearest — 13-21°C, about 20 mm over three days, seven hours of sun — and in 2027, without the flower festival, it is also at its calmest. Christmas and New Year: the peak fortnight, quantified
The month is not evenly priced. The first two and a half weeks of December are ordinary high season; roughly 20 December to 3 January is the most expensive fortnight of the year outside Tet. In 2027 the calendar sharpens it, because Christmas Day is a Saturday and New Year's Eve a Friday, so both anchors sit on long weekends.
Put numbers on it using the site's hotel prices guide as the baseline and the premium documented in the Christmas in Vietnam guide on top. As of mid-2026 a Phu Quoc 4-star runs $130-260 a night (roughly 3.4 to 6.8 million VND) in a normal high-season window; add the 25 to 40 percent holiday premium and the same room is $165-365 (4.3 to 9.5 million VND), with flagship resorts that list at $300-900 climbing toward and past $1,000. A Sapa 4-star moves from $75-150 to about $95-210 (2.5 to 5.5 million VND); a Hoi An 4-star from $80-170 to roughly $100-240. Some rooms simply double. On top of the room, many resorts and cruises attach a compulsory gala dinner on 24 and 31 December at $50-150 per person (1.3 to 3.9 million VND), billed whether you attend or not — ask before paying a deposit.
The demand behind this is measurable: Vietnam's General Statistics Office counted about 2 million international arrivals in December 2025, up 15.7 percent year on year, capping a record 21.2 million for the year. Book the holiday fortnight several weeks to a few months ahead, or travel in the first half of the month, which buys the same weather at the lower price. Tet 2028 and why late December feels it
Tet Nguyen Dan 2028 falls on Wednesday 26 January 2028, opening the Year of the Monkey (Mậu Thân). The conversion works like this: Tet begins at the second new moon after the winter solstice. After the solstice on 22 December 2027, the new moons fall on 28 December and 26 January in Hanoi time, so 26 January is mùng 1, the first lunar day. Tet Eve is Tuesday 25 January, and tháng Chạp, the last lunar month of the Year of the Goat, opens on Tuesday 28 December 2027. Vietnam and China share the date in 2028; the Vietnamese calendar, calculated on Hanoi time, occasionally differs by a day, but not this year.
An early Tet matters to a December trip in three ways. First, the pre-Tet season starts inside the Christmas fortnight rather than after it: the build-up that Tet 2027 placed in late January begins, for 2028, in the last days of December, so the usual early-January price dip is shorter and shallower. Second, domestic flights and trains for the Tet week sell out earlier — Vietnamese families booking their journeys home compete with your late-December leisure booking on the same aircraft. Third, the official 2028 holiday schedule, normally published by the labour ministry around October or November of the preceding year, may already be out when you book, so check it. What's on in December 2027
- Hoi An full-moon lantern night — Saturday 11 December. The 14th day of the eleventh lunar month. Better odds of a dry evening than November's edition, and a weekend crowd to match.
- Christmas Eve, Friday 24 December. The event, not the day after: Ho Chi Minh City's cathedral district and Nguyen Hue walking street fill with lights and crowds, and Hanoi's St Joseph's Cathedral and Nha Trang's parishes hold their own. Detail in the Christmas guide.
- New Year's Eve, Friday 31 December. Countdowns and fireworks in the big cities, resort gala dinners on the coast.
- Not on: the Da Lat Flower Festival. Biennial. The 11th edition ran in December 2026; the 12th is expected in December 2028. Da Lat in December 2027 has the weather and none of the programme.
- Tháng Chạp begins, Tuesday 28 December. The last lunar month, and the unofficial start of the Tet 2028 season.

Where to go, and where to think twice
Go: Phu Quoc and the southern islands, booked early; Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong on any schedule; Da Lat, at its clearest and, in 2027, its quietest; Hanoi for cool, dry city days with a jacket; Sapa if cold is the point and the packing is right.
Think twice: Hue and the central coast in the first ten days; Nha Trang as a beach-first destination; Ha Long Bay if sharp blue-water photographs are the goal; Sapa if you are relying on guesthouse heating; anywhere on the coast between 20 December and 3 January without a booking made months out.
The verdict: December 2027 is a superb month for the south, a good cold month for the north if you dress for it, and a still-improving month for the centre. Its cost is the calendar, not the climate. Travel in the first half, or accept the premium knowingly, and remember that the Tet 2028 tide starts rising before the Christmas one has gone out.
Limitations
Everything above rests on historical climate averages, and winters deviate hard. The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting's outlook for the 2026-27 winter, for example, called for temperatures 0.5-1.5°C above the long-term average with severe cold spells arriving later than usual — one year's forecast, not a trend you can book against, but a reminder that a given December can be milder or sharper than the table. Cold waves are predictable only two to three days out, and snow in Sapa is a rare event. Workaround: treat the table as a prior, check the forecast a few days before any far-north leg, and pack for the cold end of the range.
Prices and dates carry caveats too. The hotel figures are mid-2026 planning bands with a holiday premium layered on by arithmetic, not observed 2027 rates, and gala-dinner charges vary widely by property. The Tet 2028 date is an astronomical conversion, and Vietnam's official days-off schedule for it will not be published until late 2027. Workaround: get holiday-period rates in writing with any compulsory dinner itemised, and confirm the Tet arrangement once the labour ministry publishes it.
