Take a sleeper bus or a limousine van. For most travellers heading from Ho Chi Minh City to the beach and kitesurfing town of Mui Ne, a road transfer is the simplest, cheapest, and most frequent option - roughly $7-15 one-way for a journey of about 200 km that takes around 4 hours. The direct train reaches Phan Thiet, not Mui Ne, so it needs a 24 km transfer at the end. A private car is the comfortable upgrade for families or groups, and thanks to a new expressway it is now genuinely quick. Here is how the options stack up.
How far is it, and how long
Mui Ne sits on the coast of Binh Thuan province, about 200 km east of Ho Chi Minh City. On paper that is a long half-day; in practice the trip has become noticeably faster since the Phan Thiet-Dau Giay Expressway opened in 2023, cutting a chunk out of the old grind through Dong Nai. A road transfer now runs about 4 hours for scheduled buses and vans that make pickups, and as little as 2.5-3 hours for a private car that goes straight through.
The train is a separate story. The line does not reach Mui Ne itself - it terminates at Phan Thiet, roughly 24 km short of the resort strip - so any rail journey ends with a taxi or local bus.

By sleeper bus and limousine van - the default
This is what most visitors should use. Several established operators run the route many times a day, and you can pick your comfort level.
- Phuong Trang (FUTA Bus Lines) - the largest operator in the south, with a modern fleet and its own stations. Reliable and frequent.

Two broad tiers exist. Standard sleeper buses - the reclining two-tier cabins Vietnam is known for - are the cheapest, from roughly $7-12 (about 160,000-280,000 VND). By train to Phan Thiet
The train is a pleasant, low-stress alternative if you like rail travel and do not mind the transfer at the end. Vietnam Railways runs a dedicated branch-line service between Saigon and Phan Thiet, the SPT trains.
The usual daily departure is SPT2, leaving Saigon around 06:45 and arriving Phan Thiet about 10:45 - roughly 4 hours - with the return SPT1 leaving Phan Thiet around 13:00. Extra SPT services run only on major holiday dates, so check before you plan around them. Fares from Saigon are modest: air-conditioned soft seats about 230,000 VND (around $8), VIP deluxe seats about 259,000 VND, and soft sleepers roughly 302,000-349,000 VND. The catch is the last leg. Phan Thiet station is about 24 km northeast of Mui Ne, a 25-30 minute drive. A taxi runs around 260,000 VND (about $11); the local red bus 9 leaves from the road outside the station roughly every 20 minutes for about 6,000 VND if you are travelling light. A word of warning about the mainline: some travellers try to use a Reunification Line train stopping at Binh Thuan (Muong Man) junction instead, but that station is further out - closer to 38 km from Mui Ne, with taxis around 500,000 VND and about an hour of driving. Stick to the direct Phan Thiet service unless timing forces the mainline.
By private car
A private car with driver is the fastest and least stressful way, and the new expressway has made it genuinely quick - roughly 2.5-3 hours door-to-door. Expect about $56-75 one-way for a 4 to 7-seat vehicle, which is very reasonable split between a family or a group. Expressway tolls, around 130,000 VND per car since early 2026, are usually folded into the quoted price, but confirm that when you book so it does not appear as an add-on later.
This is the sensible choice if you are travelling with kids, a lot of luggage, or on a schedule the bus timetable does not fit - for example an early Mui Ne check-in or a same-day onward connection. Any Ho Chi Minh City hotel or a booking platform can arrange one.
When to go to Mui Ne
Mui Ne has a distinct dry season, roughly November to April, when you can expect reliable sun and little rain - the window most beach visitors aim for. Conveniently, that overlaps the town's main kitesurfing and windsurfing wind season, with the strongest, most consistent wind usually from December to March. May to October is the wetter low season, with short afternoon downpours, calmer seas, and lighter wind - quieter and cheaper, but a weaker bet if wind sports are the point of your trip. Which should you pick
- Most travellers, on a budget: a sleeper bus. Cheapest, frequent, and perfectly fine for a 4-hour daytime run.
- A bit more comfort: a limousine van, for wider seats and hotel-area pickup at a small premium.
- Train fans, daytime scenery: the direct SPT service to Phan Thiet, accepting the short transfer at the end.
- Families, groups, luggage, or awkward timings: a private car, now quick enough on the expressway to feel like the obvious upgrade.
The honest summary is that the expressway has made the road the default for this route. The train is a nice ride and worth it if you enjoy rail travel, but it drops you 24 km short of Mui Ne, which erodes its time advantage. Limitations
Road-transfer times on this route are less predictable than the headline "4 hours" suggests. Weekend and holiday traffic leaving Ho Chi Minh City, pickup detours around town at the start, and the number of hotel drop-offs at the Mui Ne end all stretch the journey, and a scheduled sleeper bus making multiple stops can run closer to 5 hours than 4. Workaround: if time matters, take an early-morning departure to beat the city traffic, or book a private car that goes straight onto the expressway; if you are on a bus, pick a limousine van with fewer seats and fewer stops rather than a full-size sleeper doing the whole strip.
Fares and, especially, train schedules shift with the season. The SPT service is thin - often a single daily departure each way - and extra trains appear only on major holidays, so the train can simply be unavailable at the time you want. Workaround: check current SPT times on Vietnam Railways before committing, and if the timetable does not fit, treat the bus or a private car as the reliable fallback. Always confirm the day's departures rather than trusting a fixed number, and verify whether tolls and pickup are included in any private-car quote.
