By train: the best option

The Reunification Express trains start in Hanoi and stop at Ninh Binh about two hours later. These are the times from Ninh Binh to Hue in the current timetable published by Seat 61:

TrainLeaves Ninh BinhArrives Hue

SE511:1122:38
SE321:3507:59 next day
SE123:0709:35 next day

The overnight trains are the ones to take for most trips. A four-berth soft-sleeper cabin is the comfortable choice: you board after dinner in Tam Coc, sleep, and arrive in time for breakfast in Hue. The daytime trains take about an hour longer, but they run along the coast of central Vietnam in daylight.

Fares from Ninh Binh sit a little below the Hanoi to Hue fares, because you ride about 570 of the line's 688 km. On the best trains, SE1 to SE4, Hanoi to Hue costs about 569,000 VND in soft seat, 1,070,000 VND in a six-berth hard sleeper and 1,218,000 VND in a four-berth soft sleeper as of 2026, according to our train fares guide. Berths are sold from Hanoi first, so book sleepers from Ninh Binh a few days ahead, through Vietnam Railways or an agent such as 12Go or Baolau.

Ninh Binh station is in the city, about 7 km from Tam Coc; allow 20 minutes by Grab or taxi.

By sleeper bus: the budget option

Sleeper buses leave Ninh Binh and the Tam Coc area around 20:30, usually with hotel pickup, and arrive in Hue early the next morning after about 10.5 to 12 hours. Fares are about 350,000-400,000 VND ($14-16) as of 2026, and VIP cabin buses cost more. Book through your homestay or on a platform such as Vexere or 12Go.

The bus saves money compared with a train sleeper berth, but the berths are shorter, the ride is rougher, and arrival times vary more. For a journey this long, most people find the train worth the difference. Our sleeper bus fares guide compares the classes.

Flying via Hanoi

Ninh Binh has no airport. To fly, you would go back north to Noi Bai, two to three hours by road, then fly about 1 hour 20 minutes to Hue's Phu Bai airport; our Hanoi to Hue guide covers the flights. Counting check-in and transfers, that is six hours or more, and more expensive than the train. It is only worth it if you want to avoid an overnight journey.

Breaking the trip at Phong Nha

If you have two or three days to spare, stop at Phong Nha on the way. The trains stop at Dong Hoi, about 45 km from the caves, and several buses from the north go to Phong Nha village itself. From Phong Nha, Hue is about 210 km, around four hours by road or about three hours by train from Dong Hoi. Our Hanoi to Phong Nha and Hue to Phong Nha guides cover the details.

Which should you pick?

  • Most travellers: the SE3 overnight train in a soft sleeper, arriving at 07:59.
  • On a budget: the evening sleeper bus.
  • Want to see the countryside: the 08:17 SE7 daytime train.
  • Have extra days: stop at Phong Nha and continue to Hue by road or rail.

Gotchas

  • Holidays. Trains and buses fill up around Tet and Vietnamese long weekends. Book sleepers early.
  • Early arrivals. Buses can arrive in Hue before dawn. Ask your hotel about early check-in or luggage storage.
  • The central coast's rainy season. From October to December Hue is wet and flood-prone, and heavy rain can delay trains and close roads. Our Hue weather guide explains the season, and where to stay in Hue covers the neighbourhoods.

Limitations

Train times come from the timetable published by Seat 61 in June 2026 and can change when Vietnam Railways revises its schedule. We have not found a published Ninh Binh to Hue fare, so train prices are given relative to the Hanoi to Hue fare. Bus fares and departure times come from 2026 operator listings and vary by company and season.

Workaround: check the current timetable and fare on the Vietnam Railways site or an agent when you book, confirm the bus pickup point and time with your operator, and allow a buffer in the rainy season.
