Quy Nhon has a simple split. From February to August it is a beach town: little rain, long sunny days, calm seas and highs that climb from about 28°C to 34°C. From September to December it is on the wet, stormy central coast: about three-quarters of the year's rain falls in those four months, with over 500 mm in October, and typhoons and floods are possible. The best months are February to April; May to August stay sunny but get very hot.
Quy Nhon sits on the long stretch of coast between Hoi An and Nha Trang that most itineraries skip, and our Quy Nhon and Phu Yen guide covers its beaches, Cham towers and islands. Since the 2025 provincial mergers, Quy Nhon is a ward of Gia Lai province and its capital, although many sites still call the area Binh Dinh.

The year totals about 1,850 mm of rain, but it is very unevenly spread: October and November alone bring more than half of it. Quy Nhon runs on the central-coast calendar, like Da Nang and Hoi An to the north, and unlike Ho Chi Minh City, where summer is the rainy season.
The dry season, February to April: the best months
This is Quy Nhon at its most comfortable. Rain falls to under 35 mm a month over five to seven days, sunshine rises from about 187 to 261 hours a month, and highs sit at 28-31°C with nights of 22-25°C. The sea is calm and clear and warms from about 25°C to 27.5°C. It is the time for Ky Co and Eo Gio, the beaches north of the city, and for the boat trips to the islands.
January is the swing month. The monsoon rains are ending, but it still brings about 67 mm over 14 days and the least settled seas of the dry half of the year.
Summer, May to August: sunny and very hot
Quy Nhon's summer is dry and sunny, the opposite of southern Vietnam's wet summer. Rain stays at about 44-85 mm a month, sunshine is at its peak at about 236-273 hours, and the sea is at its warmest, around 29°C. The catch is the heat: average highs are 33-34°C and nights stay around 27°C. Go to the beach early and late, and rest at midday. The sea is calm, so it is a good season for island trips and snorkelling.
A minor storm window runs from late April to June, but storms in that period are rarer and generally weaker than in the autumn.
The wet season, September to December: storms and floods
The north-east monsoon arrives in September. Rain jumps to about 231 mm in September, 521 mm in October and 464 mm in November, with 16 to 22 rain days a month, before easing to about 206 mm in December. This is also the main typhoon season on this coast, from September to about mid-December, peaking in October and November.
Most years, storms strike further north or south, but not every year. In November 2025, Quy Nhon was hit twice in two weeks. Typhoon Kalmaegi crossed the coast nearby on 6 November, and Quy Nhon's weather station measured gusts of about 144 km/h; more than 2,400 roofs were damaged in the province, as Euronews reported. Then, on 18-19 November, floodwater from the Ha Thanh and Con rivers covered several wards more than 1 m deep, and the city recorded 380 mm of rain on 19 November, a record for the month. The seas are also rough from November to January, and boats to the island of Cu Lao Xanh often cannot run.
What the weather means for your trip
Choosing the month. February to April is best; May to August suits beach lovers who can handle the heat; September, and above all October and November, carry a real risk of storms, floods and cancelled boat trips; December and January are quieter but grey and choppy.
Booking in the wet season. If you must go between September and December, book refundable rooms and transport, watch the forecast, and follow local advice if a storm approaches.
Combining with other places. Quy Nhon's calendar matches the rest of the central coast, so Hue and Hoi An share its wet autumn, while Nha Trang, further south, is wet from September to December too but gets far less rain. If you want a quieter beach elsewhere, see our quietest beaches guide.
Limitations
The table uses official long-run averages for Quy Nhon's weather station, as reproduced on Wikipedia; the source does not state the averaging period or rain-day threshold, and older datasets give slightly different figures. Single years vary a lot, and a single storm can bring a month's rain in a day. The 2025 storm and flood figures come from press reports.
Workaround: use this page to choose the season, check the national forecast in the days before you travel, and book flexible rooms and boat trips between September and December.
