Cao Bang has no airport or railway, so the trip from Hanoi is by road: about 282 km via the Bac Giang-Lang Son expressway and Highway 4A. Sleeper buses and limousine vans leave Hanoi's My Dinh station from early morning to late evening and take about 6 to 8 hours, for roughly 350,000-700,000 VND ($13-27) as of 2026. A private car is faster and suits groups heading straight to Ban Gioc waterfall. A new expressway into the province, due to cut the journey to about 3.5 hours, is opening in stages.
Cao Bang is the quieter alternative to Ha Giang in Vietnam's far north, home to Ban Gioc waterfall and a loop of karst valleys and caves. Our Ha Giang vs Cao Bang comparison sets the two side by side.

By bus and limousine van
More than a dozen operators run between Hanoi's My Dinh bus station and Cao Bang city, using double-deck sleeper buses and smaller limousine vans, with departures from early morning to late evening. Fares run roughly 350,000-700,000 VND one way as of mid-2026, from a standard sleeper berth at the low end to a cabin or limousine seat at the top. Check whether your operator offers pickup in central Hanoi or departs only from My Dinh, and confirm the drop-off point in Cao Bang.
The journey takes about 6 to 8 hours. The first part is quick, on the expressway north-east towards Lang Son, and the slower part is Highway 4A through the mountains to Cao Bang, where heavy trucks heading to the Chinese border can hold up traffic. Overnight buses arrive in the early morning, which suits travellers heading on to Ban Gioc; daytime limousine vans are more comfortable and let you see the scenery. Book through the operator, your hotel or a platform such as Vexere, and see our sleeper bus fares guide for how the classes compare.
By private car
A private car with driver is the most flexible option, and the only way to reach Ban Gioc from Hanoi in a single stretch without changing vehicles. It suits two to four people, families and photographers who want to stop. Agencies and hotels quote per car, and prices vary widely with the vehicle and whether you go only to Cao Bang city or on to the falls, so compare a few quotes and confirm what is included.
The new expressway
The Dong Dang to Tra Linh expressway will link the Lang Son border area with Cao Bang, replacing the slowest part of the route. A 62 km first section, from Dong Dang to Dong Khe, was scheduled for technical opening in May 2026, with the rest of the 93 km first phase targeted for December 2026. Vietnamese press reports, including VietNamNet, say that once it is open, the journey between Hanoi and Cao Bang should fall to about 3.5 hours, from 6 to 7 hours today.
Bus operators take time to change their routes and schedules, so don't expect every service to use the new road straight away. Ask your operator which route they take.
Onward to Ban Gioc
Ban Gioc waterfall, on the Chinese border in Trung Khanh district, is about 83 km beyond Cao Bang city, roughly 360 km from Hanoi in total, and the last stretch is slow mountain road. From Cao Bang city, take a local bus, rent a motorbike or hire a car. Door to door from Hanoi, that is about 8 to 10 hours, so most travellers spend a night in Cao Bang city or near the falls. Our Ban Gioc waterfall guide covers entry, the bamboo rafts and the best season, and our Cao Bang loop guide covers a three- or four-day circuit that includes the falls, Nguom Ngao cave and Pac Bo.
Which should you pick?
- On a budget: an overnight sleeper bus, arriving in the early morning.
- Most travellers: a daytime limousine van, then a night in Cao Bang city.
- Two to four people going straight to the falls: a private car.
- Riding the loop: a bus to Cao Bang city and a rented bike or easy-rider from there.
Gotchas
- Season. Ban Gioc is at its fullest in September and October, after the rains. From June to August heavy rain can bring landslides and delays on the mountain roads, and winters are cold and often foggy. The far north's seasons are similar to Ha Giang's; see our Ha Giang weather guide.
- Holidays. Buses and homestays fill up around Tet and Vietnamese long weekends.
- Early arrivals. Overnight buses can arrive before dawn. Arrange early check-in or head straight on to the falls.
If you are also planning Ha Giang, our Hanoi to Ha Giang guide covers that route.
Limitations
Fares, departure times and journey times come from 2026 operator listings and our own guides, and they vary by company, season and traffic. The expressway dates are official targets reported in the Vietnamese press, and we have not confirmed which sections are open to traffic as you read this; its effect on bus times will depend on how quickly operators switch routes.
Workaround: book with a named operator that confirms the pickup point and arrival time, ask which road it uses, and allow a buffer on arrival day, especially in the rainy season.
