Ho Chi Minh City to Hue is about 1,040 km by rail, most of the length of Vietnam. The fastest way is a nonstop flight of about 1 hour 20 minutes on Vietnam Airlines or Vietjet, with about ten flights a day between them. The Reunification Express is the scenic option: the evening trains SE2 and SE4 leave Saigon after dinner and reach Hue in the middle of the next afternoon, in about 19.5 hours, passing the central coast in daylight. Direct sleeper buses exist but take about a day.
Hue, the old imperial capital, is a natural stop between the south and the north, and our 2 days in Hue itinerary plans the visit once you arrive.

By air: the fastest option
Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet fly nonstop from Tan Son Nhat to Hue's Phu Bai airport, with about 35 and 34 flights a week respectively in a September 2026 search. The flight takes about 1 hour 20 minutes. In that search, the cheapest one-way fare was about $30 on Vietjet, and typical return fares ran from about $70 to $155, with January usually the cheapest month and May the dearest. Book early for Tet and the summer holidays. Our domestic flight prices guide compares routes, and our Tan Son Nhat airport guide covers getting to the airport.
Into Hue. Phu Bai is about 13 to 17 km south of the centre, about 30 minutes by road. A taxi costs about 250,000 to 270,000 VND, and Grab about the same, although drivers pick up at a designated point rather than at the kerb. Shared minivans charge about 100,000 VND per person.
By train: the Reunification Express
The Reunification Express runs the whole line from Saigon to Hanoi, stopping at Hue. These are the times in the timetable published by Seat 61 in June 2026:
| Train | Leaves Saigon | Arrives Hue | Journey |
|---|---|---|---|
| SE8 | 06:00 | 01:59 next day | ~20 hours |
| SE6 | 08:40 | 04:31 next day | ~19h 50m |
| SE10 | 13:20 | 12:59 next day | ~23h 40m |
| SE4 | 19:25 | 15:12 next day | ~19h 47m |
| SE2 | 20:35 | 16:03 next day | ~19h 28m |
SE2 and SE4 are the ones to take. You board in the evening, sleep through the southern half of the country, wake up on the coast near Quy Nhon, and pass Da Nang and the Hai Van Pass, the most scenic part of the line, in the early afternoon. The morning trains arrive in Hue in the small hours.
On the best trains, SE1 to SE4, Seat 61 lists these 2026 fares from Saigon to Hue:
| Class | Fare |
|---|---|
| Soft seat, air-conditioned | ~698,000 VND |
| Hard sleeper, 6 berths | ~906,000-1,165,000 VND, top to bottom berth |
| Soft sleeper, 4 berths | ~1,276,000-1,326,000 VND, upper or lower berth |
Other trains are slightly cheaper, and fares vary by season. Tickets usually go on sale about 60 days ahead through Vietnam Railways or agents. The private tourist carriages that run between Hanoi and Hue do not run from Saigon. Our train fares guide explains the classes.
By sleeper bus
Direct sleeper buses run from Ho Chi Minh City to Hue, with operators including Phuong Trang, Tan Quang Dung, Minh Phuong and Hoang Long, at roughly 500,000 to 1,150,000 VND on the main operators as of 2026, and more for VIP cabins. Several arrive at Hue's southern bus station on An Duong Vuong street. The journey takes about a day on the road, and a flight booked ahead often costs little more, so the bus makes sense mainly if you want to avoid flying. Our sleeper bus fares guide compares the classes.
Breaking the journey
The train stops at the main towns of the central coast, so you can split the trip into shorter legs:
- Nha Trang: about 869,000 VND for a lower soft-sleeper berth from Saigon, and about 864,000 VND from Nha Trang on to Hue.
- Quy Nhon: trains stop at Dieu Tri station, about 10 to 13 km from the city; our where to stay in Quy Nhon guide covers the town.
- Da Nang and Hoi An: about 1,274,000 VND for a lower soft-sleeper berth from Saigon to Da Nang; Hoi An has no station and is 30 to 45 minutes away by taxi, for about 350,000 VND. From Da Nang, Hue is about 2.5 hours on by train; see our Da Nang to Hue guide.
Which should you pick?
- Short on time: fly, and book ahead for the best fares.
- Love trains: SE2 or SE4 in a soft sleeper, arriving mid-afternoon.
- Travelling slowly: stop at Nha Trang, Quy Nhon or Hoi An on the way.
- Avoiding flights on a budget: the sleeper bus, if you do not mind a day on the road.
Gotchas
- Flood season. From October to December, heavy rain on the central coast can suspend trains and flood Hue. In late October 2025, services on the north-south line were suspended and Hue's monuments closed. Our Hue weather guide explains the season.
- Holidays. Trains, buses and flights sell out around Tet and Vietnamese long weekends. Book early.
- Night arrivals. The morning trains reach Hue between about 02:00 and 04:30; check your hotel's check-in policy.
Limitations
Flight frequencies and fares come from a single September 2026 search and change daily. Train times and fares are Seat 61's June 2026 figures for the best trains and were not checked live with Vietnam Railways. Bus fares come from a booking platform, whose journey times are approximate.
Workaround: compare fares on the dates you want, check the current train timetable with Vietnam Railways or an agent when booking, and allow flexibility in the October-to-December flood season.
