Mui Ne is one of the driest and sunniest places in Vietnam. The dry season, from December to April, is almost rainless and brings the steady north-east wind that has made Mui Ne a kitesurfing centre, peaking from December to February. From May to October, showers arrive, the wind turns lighter and less reliable, and the water is calmer. It is hot all year, at 29-33°C by day, with a sea warm enough to swim in every month. Typhoons rarely reach this stretch of coast.
The reason is geography. Mui Ne faces south-east, sheltered from the worst of both monsoons, so it gets about half the rain of Da Nang and less than Nha Trang, whose wet season also runs later, from September to December. The red and white sand dunes behind the beach are the clearest sign of how dry it is.
Mui Ne weather at a glance
Mui Ne has no official weather station, so the table uses long-run averages for Phan Thiet, about 15 km along the coast, from the Vietnam Institute for Building Science and Technology, as published in Wikipedia's climate table. Sea temperatures are from Climates to Travel.

The year totals about 1,090 mm of rain and about 2,860 hours of sunshine. Temperatures barely move: the warmest month is only about 3°C warmer than the coolest by day. What changes is rain, and wind.
Dry season, December to April: sun and wind
This is Mui Ne's high season. From January to March, the whole three months bring only about 9 mm of rain at Phan Thiet, and the sun shines for 265 to 297 hours a month. Days are 29-32°C, nights a pleasant 21-25°C, and the sea is at its coolest, about 25-26°C, which still feels warm.
It is also kite season. The north-east monsoon blows along the coast from about November to April, peaking from December to February. Kite schools report afternoon winds of roughly 18 to 25 knots or more in the peak months, usually light in the morning, building in the late morning and easing in the evening. That makes the main beach choppy after lunch: good for kitesurfing and windsurfing, less so for a quiet swim. March and April are a little calmer, and April is the hottest, sunniest stretch before the rains.
The dunes are at their best now too, at sunrise between about 5:55 and 6:10 from December to February. Our day trips from Mui Ne guide covers the jeep tours, which leave at about 4:30.
Rainy season, May to October: showers and calm
About 89% of the year's rain falls from May to October, at 143 to 187 mm a month and 13 to 19 rain days, peaking in September. It usually comes as showers, with dry spells of a few days in between, rather than days of steady rain, and the sun still shines for 200-250 hours a month. The sea is at its warmest, about 28.5-29.5°C.
The wind drops and turns south-easterly or south-westerly, and it becomes much less reliable: kite schools warn of spells of a week or two with little wind. For kitesurfers that is a problem; for everyone else it means calmer mornings on the water, emptier beaches and lower room rates. May and early June are the sweet spot, sunny and hot before the heaviest rain.
November: the shoulder month
November sits between the two. Rain falls to about 55 mm over seven days, the wind starts to build, and kite schools open their season. It is a good-value month, although late October and November are also the months when a passing storm is most likely to bring a few days of heavy rain.
Typhoons: rare, but not impossible
In southern Vietnam, the storm season runs from about mid-October to late December, peaking in early November. Most storms either strike the central coast further north or weaken over the sea, and this coast is known for its few storms. A passing system can still bring heavy rain and rough seas, so check the forecast if you travel in late October or November.
What the weather means for your trip
Choosing the month. December to April for sun and wind, with December to February for the strongest kiting; May and June for calm water; July to October for low prices and quiet beaches, with showers.
Kitesurfing. Beginners do best in the steadier peak months, with lessons booked a week or two ahead in December to March. Advanced riders who want lighter crowds sometimes prefer March and April.
Getting there. Mui Ne is about four hours by road from Ho Chi Minh City; see our Ho Chi Minh City to Mui Ne guide. There are no commercial flights to Phan Thiet yet: work on its civil airport began in April 2026 and is expected to take about two years. If you are combining the coast with the hills, our Nha Trang weather guide and Da Lat weather guide show how their seasons differ, and our 5 days in south Vietnam itinerary puts Mui Ne into a wider trip.
Limitations
The table uses long-run averages for Phan Thiet, about 15 km from Mui Ne; conditions on the Mui Ne strip, especially the wind, can differ. The source does not state the averaging period or rain-day threshold. Wind strengths come from kite schools rather than an official station, and the station data we found understate the afternoon sea breeze on the beach. Single seasons vary.
Workaround: use this page to choose the season, check a wind and weather forecast in the days before you travel, and ask your kite school about recent conditions before booking lessons.
