Ninh Binh to Ha Long Bay is about 190 to 200 km by road, and there is no train or direct expressway, so you go by van, bus or private car. Vans and buses leave Tam Coc from about 04:00 to 18:00, take about 3.5 to 4.5 hours and cost roughly 250,000-480,000 VND ($10-18) one way on Baolau's listings for late October 2026. A private car takes about 3 to 3.5 hours for roughly $60-150 per car. A day trip there and back is possible but long. It is a little easier from Hanoi, and better still as a one-way move with a night on the bay.
The route usually links two halves of a northern trip: a couple of nights around Tam Coc, then a cruise on Ha Long Bay. The Ninh Binh destination guide covers the first half, and the 5 days in north Vietnam itinerary shows how the pieces fit. Every time below is matched to its mode, as in the Vietnam travel time atlas: vans and buses run slower than cars on the same roads.
Comparison at a glance
| Option | Time | Price (2026) | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shared van or minibus | ~3.5-4.5 hours | ~250,000-460,000 VND ($10-18) | Most travellers |
| Sleeper bus | ~4-4.5 hours | ~480,000 VND ($18) | Very early starts |
| Private car | ~3-3.5 hours | ~$60-150 per car | Families, groups, early cruise check-ins |
| Train or bus via Hanoi | ~5-6 hours | ~$5-15 | Rarely worth it |
Prices are one way, per person unless a car is shown, at about 26,000 VND to the dollar.
By shared van: the usual choice
Vans and minibuses are how most travellers make this trip. In a Baolau search for Saturday 24 October 2026, every departure started in Tam Coc and ended at Bai Chay, Tuan Chau or Hon Gai:
| Operator | Leaves Tam Coc | Listed time | Fare | Ends at |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| The Long Travel | 07:00 | 4 hours | 250,000 VND | Bai Chay or Tuan Chau |
| The Long Travel | 07:30 | 4 hours | 300,000 VND | Bai Chay or Tuan Chau |
| The Long Travel | Every hour, 06:00-18:00 | 4 hours | 460,000 VND | Bai Chay or Tuan Chau |
| Operator not named | 05:45 | 3h 15m | 350,000 VND | Hon Gai |
| Duc Duong (sleeper bus) | 04:00 | 4h 30m | 480,000 VND | Bai Chay or Tuan Chau |
Baolau does not say which vehicle each fare buys. The Long Travel runs everything from 29-seat buses to 10-seat limousine vans, and Duc Duong runs double-deck sleeper buses, so ask before you pay. Bookaway also listed Ninh Binh Excursion and Quang Muoi Limousine at about $11-15 on 21 October 2026, and Bhaya Cruises' June 2026 route guide puts the limousine fare at 350,000-400,000 VND.
Pickup and drop-off. Most vans leave from operator offices around Tam Coc, and some collect from hotels, so confirm which when you book. Tuan Chau is the island with the main cruise port and Bai Chay the hotel district, about 20 minutes apart, as the where to stay in Ha Long Bay guide explains, so ask for your cruise's pier rather than just "Ha Long". The limousine van guide covers why pickup loops add time.
Which departure. Most overnight cruises board between about 11:30 and 13:00, according to the Bhaya guide. A van leaving Tam Coc at 06:00 to 07:30 reaches the piers at about 10:00 to 11:30, a small margin for traffic. Later vans suit a night in Bai Chay before the cruise.
By private car
A car with driver takes about 3 to 3.5 hours door to door. The Bhaya guide puts a 4-seat car at $60-90 one way, with 7-seaters a little more, and transfer companies on Bookaway averaged about $76-150 per car in October 2026. That is roughly 1.5 to 4 million VND, more than four van seats, but the car leaves when you want and drops you at your pier, which makes it the safest choice if your cruise boards before noon. The car and driver hire guide explains what is normally included.
Why it takes three to four hours
There is no direct expressway yet. The fast route runs north on the Cau Gie-Ninh Binh expressway, crosses to the Hanoi-Hai Phong expressway, either near Hanoi or on the link road from Liem Tuyen near Phu Ly, and finishes on the Ha Long-Hai Phong expressway, open since 2018. That link road's four-lane Hung Yen section opened in July 2024 and saves up to 30 minutes against the old Yen Lenh bridge route, Tap chi Cong Thuong reported. The Bhaya guide says the time depends on traffic near Hanoi and on the expressway into Quang Ninh.
A direct road is coming. The Ninh Binh-Hai Phong expressway (CT.08) starts at the Mai Son junction south of Tam Coc, as Dai Doan Ket described it. Its first 25.3 km, in Ninh Binh, was about 30% built in March 2026 and aimed to finish around the end of November 2026, Dan Tri reported. The 60.9 km section through the former Nam Dinh and Thai Binh provinces broke ground in May 2025, due for completion in 2027 and operation from 2028, though the Prime Minister asked for 2026, according to Nhan Dan. Until it all opens, expect the times above.
Can you do Ha Long Bay as a day trip from Ninh Binh?
You can, but it is a long day, and it is a little easier from Hanoi. On the 24 October Baolau timetable, the 06:00 van from Tam Coc reaches Tuan Chau at 10:00, in time for a day cruise from the day-boat port there, and the last van back leaves Bai Chay or Tuan Chau at 18:00 and reaches Tam Coc at 21:30. That is about 15.5 hours door to door, 7.5 of them on the road, for roughly four hours on the water.
From Hanoi, a Ha Long Bay day trip is about 14 hours with 6 to 7 in a vehicle, and the transfer comes with the tour. So if you are going back to Hanoi anyway, do the day trip from there. Better than either is to stop treating Ha Long as a return trip:
| Plan | Time on the road | Time on the bay | Pick it if |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day trip from Ninh Binh and back | ~7.5 hours | ~4 hours | You are staying on in Ninh Binh |
| Day tour from Hanoi | ~6-7 hours | ~4 hours | You are back in Hanoi anyway |
| Van to Ha Long, overnight cruise, cruise shuttle to Hanoi | ~4 hours, then ~2.5-3 | One night aboard | Most travellers |
| Van to Ha Long, day cruise, evening van to Hanoi | ~4 hours, then ~2.5 | ~4 hours | No spare night, finishing in Hanoi |
The last plan works because vans leave Ha Long for Hanoi until 18:00: in a Baolau search for the same day, Trung Thanh Limousine and Arcady Limousine listed 18:00 departures, timed at 2h 30m, for 270,000-420,000 VND. The overnight plan is the one I would choose: sunset and sunrise are the best hours on the bay and a day trip misses both, as the Ninh Binh vs Ha Long comparison explains. The Ha Long Bay cruise cost guide sets out what a night aboard costs.
Ninh Binh and Ha Long on the same day also works if Ninh Binh is the morning: an early Trang An boat, which starts at 07:00, then a 12:00 or 13:00 van puts you in Bai Chay by about 16:00 to 17:00 for a night on land.
Ha Long Bay to Ninh Binh
Coming back, the timing hangs on when your cruise docks. In a Baolau search for 24 October 2026, The Long Travel listed 12:00 departures from Tuan Chau and Bai Chay at 250,000-300,000 VND, taking 3.5 to 4 hours, and hourly vans from 06:00 to 18:00 at 460,000 VND. Duc Duong listed sleeper buses at 12:30 and 16:30 for 480,000 VND. All end in Tam Coc. Book a van at least an hour after your cruise docks, and check first whether your cruise package includes the transfer. Heading south afterwards, the Ninh Binh to Hue guide covers the overnight train.
What about the train, or going via Hanoi?
No train links the two. Going by train or bus to Hanoi, about 2 to 2.5 hours, and on to Ha Long takes 5 to 6 hours with at least one change, the Bhaya guide says, against about 4 hours direct. It only makes sense with a night in Hanoi on the way; the Hanoi to Ninh Binh and Hanoi to Ha Long Bay guides cover each leg. For Lan Ha Bay instead, some Ninh Binh van companies, such as Ninh Binh Limousine, run to Cat Ba; the Hanoi to Cat Ba guide explains the crossings.
Which should you pick?
- Most travellers: a 06:00 to 07:30 van from Tam Coc, straight onto an overnight cruise.
- Three or four people, or a cruise that boards before noon: a private car to the pier.
- Lowest fare: The Long Travel's 07:00 departure, if it is still 250,000 VND when you book.
- A day on the bay without a night aboard: from Hanoi, or one way from Ninh Binh with an evening van to Hanoi.
Gotchas
- Weekends and holidays. Both ends fill with domestic visitors at weekends, so book a day or two ahead, as the Bhaya guide advises. The where to stay in Ninh Binh guide helps if you need an extra night.
- Storms. Cruises are cancelled when storms approach, most often from July to October; see the Ha Long Bay weather guide and keep the transfer flexible then.
- New place names. Since the 2025 reforms, Ninh Binh province takes in the former Ha Nam and Nam Dinh and Ha Long is no longer a city, but booking sites still use Tam Coc, Bai Chay, Tuan Chau and Hon Gai.
Limitations
The van times and fares come from Baolau searches for one Saturday in October 2026, which do not show the vehicle behind each fare, plus Bookaway listings and Bhaya Cruises' guide from June to October 2026. Car quotes differ by more than double between sources, I could not confirm which road each operator takes, and the CT.08 dates are targets, not opening dates.
Workaround: book with a named operator that confirms the vehicle, pickup point and pier in writing, compare two car quotes, and check the expressway news the week before you travel.
