Direct sleeper and cabin buses link Sapa and Ninh Binh in both directions, in about 8 to 9 hours for roughly 375,000-620,000 VND ($14-24) on Vexere and Baolau listings checked in October 2026. Most leave Sapa in the late morning or around 22:00 and drop off in Tam Coc. A private car takes about 6.5 to 7.5 hours and costs roughly $150-320 per car. There is no direct train: the Lao Cai sleeper to Hanoi plus a Reunification Express train to Ninh Binh takes 13 hours or more. The road is about 400-415 km.
Sapa and Ninh Binh sit on opposite sides of Hanoi, and as the Local Vietnam guide to the route points out, there is no shortcut around the capital. The Hanoi to Sapa and Hanoi to Ninh Binh guides cover each half.
Comparison at a glance
| Option | Time | Price (2026) | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct sleeper or cabin bus | ~8-9 hours | ~375,000-620,000 VND ($14-24) | Most travellers |
| Quickest listed shared service | ~7.5 hours | 780,000 VND ($30) | Saving an hour |
| Two buses via Hanoi | ~9-11 hours with the change | ~$25-37 | A meal or a night in Hanoi |
| Train via Hanoi | ~13-17 hours, overnight | ~590,000-660,000 VND ($23-25), plus the shuttle | A real bed |
| Private car | ~6.5-7.5 hours | ~$150-320 per car | Families, groups of 2-4 |
Prices are for one person, one way, unless a car is shown, at about 26,000 VND to the dollar. Buses are slower than cars on the same roads because they collect passengers, stop for rest breaks and run at bus speeds on the expressway.
By direct bus: the usual choice
Most travellers take a direct bus. Vexere listed about 23 departures a day from Sapa to Ninh Binh from seven operators on 18 October 2026, with fares from 375,000 to 610,000 VND, a distance of about 414 km and an average trip of about 8.5 hours, on its Sapa to Ninh Binh page. A Baolau search for Saturday 24 October 2026 added two more operators and put the distance at 402 km.

The first seven rows come from Vexere and the last two from Baolau. HK Buslines and G8 appear on both with slightly different times and fares, and Baolau's fares exclude its service fee. A VIP cabin gives you a curtained pod, a sleeper an open berth; the cabin bus vs sleeper bus comparison explains the difference, and the sleeper bus fares guide compares prices on other routes.
Pickup and drop-off. In Sapa, most buses leave from operator offices on Dien Bien Phu street, such as HK Buslines at No. 732, S Trip at No. 697 and King Express at No. 458, or from Sapa bus station, and several run a shuttle from hotels in town. In Ninh Binh, most stop in Tam Coc, at the boat pier or an operator's office, and some at offices on 27/7 street in Ninh Binh city, about 7 km away. The where to stay in Ninh Binh guide explains how the two areas differ.
Day or night. Daytime buses leave Sapa between about 06:30 and 14:00 and arrive in the afternoon or evening. Night buses leave between about 20:00 and 23:00 and arrive between about 04:30 and 07:30, which saves a night's accommodation but lands you in Tam Coc long before check-in. Ha Son's 16:45-17:30 buses arrive at about 01:00-02:00.
Ask about a change in Hanoi. Most services are sold as direct, but not every vehicle goes the whole way: one operator review on Vexere's route page describes switching to another of the company's buses in Hanoi, and another a long wait at Noi Bai airport for passengers. Ask before you pay.
On board. Most of these buses have no toilet, and the Local Vietnam guide, updated in January 2026, says to expect one stop about halfway. Bring water, snacks and a warm layer.
From Ninh Binh to Sapa
The reverse trip works the same way. Vexere listed about 24 departures a day from six operators on 18 October 2026, averaging about 8.1 hours over 406 km, on its Ninh Binh to Sapa page, from King Express's 04:00 bus to Ha Son's 23:15. HK Buslines runs the most, about ten a day between 06:00 and 21:30 from the Tam Coc boat pier and its office on 27/7 street, for 550,000-600,000 VND. In the Baolau search for 24 October, Daily Limousine listed seven departures from Tam Coc between 05:00 and 18:00, at 780,000 VND and 7 hours 30 minutes.
Night buses from Ninh Binh reach Sapa between about 05:00 and 07:30, when the town, at about 1,500 metres, is cold. Local Vietnam says some buses let passengers stay aboard until it gets light, but to sleep on arrival, book your room from the night before. The 3 days in Sapa itinerary plans the stay.
Via Hanoi: two shorter legs
Breaking the trip in Hanoi gives you two shorter rides and far more departures. Buses from Sapa reach Hanoi in about 6 hours for about $15-25, and limousine vans with Old Quarter pickup reach Ninh Binh in about 2 to 2.5 hours for about $10-12, or the train in about 2 hours 15 minutes. With the transfer across town, allow about 9 to 11 hours, or stay a night in Hanoi.
By train, via Hanoi
There is no railway to Sapa and no line from Lao Cai to Ninh Binh, so the train takes three steps: a shuttle between Sapa and Lao Cai station, about 38 km and 50 minutes according to Seat 61, the Lao Cai line to Hanoi, and a Reunification Express train between Hanoi and Ninh Binh.
Vietnam Railways is adding a third daily pair of trains on the Lao Cai line, SP15 and SP16, and has cut its stops to eight stations, VietnamPlus reported on 12 October 2026. Lao Cai station handled 328,433 passengers getting on or off in the first nine months of 2026, up about 27.1% on a year earlier, the report said. These connections use those times and Seat 61's June 2026 timetable (Reunification Express, 2026):
| Direction | First train | Second train | Arrives |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sapa to Ninh Binh, overnight | SP16 21:25 or SP4 21:50 from Lao Cai, Hanoi 05:15 or 05:40 | SE7 06:00 or SE5 08:55 from Hanoi | Ninh Binh 08:17 or 11:11 |
| Sapa to Ninh Binh, by day | SP8 12:05 from Lao Cai, Hanoi 19:30 | SE1 20:50 from Hanoi | Ninh Binh 23:07 |
| Ninh Binh to Sapa | SE8 13:41 or SE6 16:51 from Ninh Binh, Hanoi 16:10 or 19:12 | SP15 21:45, SP3 22:00 or SP7 22:40 from Hanoi | Lao Cai 05:20-06:27, then the shuttle |
Door to door, that is about 13 to 17 hours, and SE7 leaves only 20 to 45 minutes to connect, so SE5 is safer. Seat 61 listed a Vietnam Railways four-berth soft sleeper on the Lao Cai line at 440,000-460,000 VND in June 2026, and a soft seat to Ninh Binh costs about 150,000-200,000 VND: a little more than the bus, for a much longer trip with a proper bed. The train booking guide explains how to buy tickets.
By private car
A car with driver is the quickest option, at about 6.5 to 7.5 hours door to door, with lunch wherever you like. That fits the car times in the Vietnam Travel Time Atlas 2026: about 5 to 6 hours between Hanoi and Sapa, and 1 hour 25 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes between Hanoi and Ninh Binh.
A north Vietnam route guide updated in October 2026 lists transfers from about $150 per car, rising to about $300 for larger vehicles, and GoAsia put them at about $173-320 in March 2026, with a trip time of 6.5 to 7.5 hours. Split four ways, that is about $38-80 each. The car and driver hire guide explains what is usually included; confirm tolls and the driver's meals are in the price.
Which should you pick?
- Most travellers: a late-morning cabin bus from Sapa, reaching Tam Coc in the evening.
- Saving a hotel night: a night bus, with a room arranged for the early arrival.
- Three or four people, or a family: a private car, leaving mid-morning.
- Long rides wear you out: two legs via Hanoi, ideally with a night there.
- You want a real bed: the Lao Cai sleeper train, then a morning train south.
Gotchas
- Province names. Since 1 July 2025, under Resolution 202/2025/QH15, Ninh Binh province has absorbed Ha Nam and Nam Dinh, and Lao Cai has absorbed Yen Bai. Vexere lists Sapa as "Sa Pa - Lao Cai", and "Ninh Binh" can mean the whole enlarged province, so check that your drop-off is Tam Coc or Ninh Binh city. The day trips from Ninh Binh guide has more on the change.
- Expressway roadworks. The 121 km Yen Bai-Lao Cai section of the Noi Bai-Lao Cai Expressway is being widened from two lanes to four, due for completion at the end of 2026, Bao Lao Cai reported in June 2026. It said traffic was not greatly affected, but allow a buffer.
- Rain, fog and holidays. Sapa is wettest from May to September and often foggy in winter, which can slow the mountain road; the Sapa and Ninh Binh weather guides have the months. Tet and long weekends fill the buses, so book a day or two ahead.
- Going on. The Ninh Binh to Hue guide covers the next leg south, and the Sapa to Ha Giang guide the direct road east from Sapa.
Limitations
Bus times, fares and operators come from Vexere's route pages, updated on 18 October 2026, and a Baolau search for 24 October 2026, and they change with the season and demand. Vexere's arrival times are estimates, and the two sites list some operators differently. The Lao Cai train times come from a single VietnamPlus report that gave no start date for SP15 and SP16, the Reunification Express times are Seat 61's June 2026 timetable, and car prices come from agency listings rather than operators.
Workaround: book with a named operator that confirms the pickup point, the drop-off and whether there is a change in Hanoi, check train times on the Vietnam Railways site a few days before you travel, and get two or three car quotes in writing with tolls included.
