Here is the plain answer: April is the last easy month to travel Vietnam end to end. The central coast is at its peak, the north is warm and green, the south is hot but still mostly dry, and nothing anywhere is badly compromised — which stops being true in May, when the southern monsoon opens and the heat turns punishing. If you want one trip that covers Hanoi, Hoi An and the Mekong without a serious weather trade-off somewhere, this is your last comfortable window until autumn.
The second half of the answer has nothing to do with weather. Reunification Day falls on Friday April 30, 2027 and International Labour Day on Saturday May 1, and that combination drives one of the biggest domestic travel surges of the Vietnamese year straight into the coastal towns you want to be in. Plan around it: put your beach and central-coast days in the first three weeks, and be somewhere quiet, inland or already flying out by April 29. These are historical climate averages, not forecasts, and published sources disagree by a useful margin — the ranges below span two of them rather than pretending to a precision that does not exist. Any individual April can run hotter, wetter or greyer.

The central coast is April's headline
This is the month the middle of the country comes good. Da Nang has historically averaged around 31°C by day with about seven hours of daily sunshine, sea temperatures near 26°C and only around 35 mm of rain — a genuine turnaround from the autumn monsoon that floods Hoi An's Old Town every year. Other sources put April rainfall closer to 90 mm, so treat it as light rather than nil. The beach season effectively opens now, before the summer humidity settles in.
Hoi An runs slightly more humid and wetter than Da Nang, and the combination of warm sea, long evenings and pre-summer light is about as good as the Old Town gets. The other April gift is the Hai Van Pass. For much of the year the crossing between Hue and Da Nang sits under cloud and the view from the old gate is a wall of grey. In April it is usually clear, which makes the overland leg worth doing properly rather than skipping onto a train.
The north: warm, green, and humid
Hanoi in April is warm and increasingly muggy. Historically the capital sits around 28-30°C by day with nights near 22°C, but the numbers undersell the feel: roughly 105 mm of rain across about 14 days, around 84 percent humidity and only about three hours of daily sunshine. This is the tail of the northern spring drizzle — not heavy rain so much as persistent damp, low cloud and grey mornings. Sapa and the far north are green, showery and beautiful. Historically the highlands run 21-27°C days with cool nights and 190-215 mm of rain, which is a lot of water but arrives mostly as afternoon showers rather than all-day rain. The terraces are being flooded and planted now, so the valleys are mirrored water rather than the gold of September. Trekking works, but expect mud.
Ha Long Bay shares Hanoi's spring haze. Seas are calm and cruises run reliably, but the same low cloud that greys the capital can flatten the karst views. It is a fine month to sail and a mediocre one to guarantee photographs.
The south: hot, and counting down to the rains
Ho Chi Minh City is in the hottest stretch of its year, historically near 35-36°C by day with high humidity and only modest rainfall — somewhere between 50 and 82 mm depending on the source, spread across about eight days. That is dry by southern standards, but the heat is the story. Sightseeing works if you front-load the day, retreat indoors from late morning to mid-afternoon and treat the Ho Chi Minh City guide as a schedule problem rather than a map problem.
The Mekong Delta is the same heat with more shade and more water. Phu Quoc is in its final dry weeks — historically around 31°C days and 130 mm of rain, with showers picking up as the month ends. Nha Trang is comfortably in its dry season, historically near 31°C with sea temperatures around 28°C, and is the most reliable southern beach bet right now.
April in the south is a countdown. The monsoon typically opens in May, and late April is when the afternoon build-up starts appearing on the horizon. A trip in the first half of the month gets the dry version; a trip in the last week increasingly does not.
The April 30 crunch, and how to plan around it
The mechanics for 2027 are straightforward. Reunification Day is Friday April 30 and Labour Day is Saturday May 1. Because Labour Day lands on a weekly rest day, holiday trackers list Monday May 3 as the compensatory day off, which produces a four-day break from Friday April 30 to Monday May 3 for anyone on a standard five-day week. Many people will stretch it further with a day or two of leave.
Two honest caveats. First, the official 2027 arrangement had not been published at the time of writing: Vietnam's 2026 schedule was announced by the Ministry of Home Affairs in mid-October 2025, so the 2027 version should land in autumn 2026. Second, recent years have sometimes seen the government extend the break beyond the statutory minimum, so four days is the floor rather than a ceiling. Treat Friday to Monday as the working assumption and re-check before you lock in non-refundable dates.
What that window looks like on the ground is worth taking seriously. Reporting on the 2026 break described average room occupancy near 99 percent in Hue over the holiday period, with visitor numbers up sharply across major cities and a matching squeeze on the coast. Domestic flights and trains sell out, coastal room rates climb, and the roads into Da Nang, Nha Trang and Vung Tau back up.
The workaround is simple and it works: finish your coastal days by around April 28, then spend the holiday somewhere that is not on the domestic top-ten list — a smaller northern town, an inland base, or a city that empties out rather than fills up. Alternatively, use the window as your travel day and fly home. What does not work is arriving in Da Nang on April 30 without a booking.
Crowds and prices in the rest of April
Outside the holiday window, April is a decent shoulder. It sits after the Tet peak and before the summer domestic season, so the first three weeks are busy without being difficult — hotels are available and rates sit well below the December-to-January international peak. Mid-month brings one smaller bump: Hung Kings' Commemoration Day falls on Friday April 16, 2027, a three-day weekend with a modest surge on trains and coastal hotels. It is a scheduling detail, not a reason to move your trip.
Airfares are middling — neither the cheap end of the year nor the expensive one, and the monthly price calendar shows where April lands against the rest. The predictable exception is the last week, when the domestic holiday pushes internal fares up.
What's on in April 2027
- Hung Kings' Commemoration Day, Friday April 16. A national holiday honouring Vietnam's legendary founding kings, centred on the Hung Temple complex in Phu Tho province north of Hanoi, with processions, offerings and folk performances. Expect heavier northern traffic that weekend.
- Reunification Day, Friday April 30. Marking the end of the war in 1975, with official ceremonies and, in major-anniversary years, large parades in Ho Chi Minh City. Public spaces in both major cities are decorated through the week.
- Beach season opening on the central coast. Less an event than a shift, but Da Nang and Hoi An's beach clubs, water sports operators and coastal resorts move into full-season mode in April.

Where to go, and where to think twice
Go: Hoi An, Da Nang and the Hue-to-Da Nang coast road, which are at their annual best; Nha Trang and Phu Quoc for their last reliably dry beach weeks; the northern mountains if you want green terraces and do not mind mud.
Think twice: Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong as the centrepiece of a long trip, given the heat; Ha Long Bay if you are booking specifically for the views rather than the sailing; and anywhere coastal and famous between April 29 and May 3.
Limitations
Everything above rests on historical climate averages, and published sources disagree meaningfully — April rainfall for Da Nang ranges from roughly 35 mm to 90 mm across the two sources used here, and single years deviate further. Late April is also a transition, so the last week can behave like May in the south. Workaround: treat the regional table as a prior rather than a plan, check each destination's ten-day forecast a week out, and give the south the earlier half of the month if you can.
The holiday arrangement is the bigger uncertainty. Vietnam's official 2027 public holiday schedule had not been announced at the time of writing, and while the statutory dates are fixed, the government has in recent years extended the April 30 break beyond the minimum.
